In October, Tom traveled to Vancouver Canada to attend a Robert Bateman Master Art Class.  It has always been a goal of Tom's to study under Robert Bateman.  "Robert Bateman has always been the type of artist that I'm inspired to become.  He is highly skilled, talented and a very good person".  Tom was able to spend five day's at Hollyhock on Cortez Island learning from this world renowned artist.  On the trip to Hollyhock, Tom was able to travel up the coast photographing and capturing reference material from the area.  In addition, Tom was able to meet and establish relationships with other accomplished and talented wildlife artists.  The entire trip was highly inspirational for Tom.

Tom Pledges Support for Trout Unlimited!

Trout Unlimited's mission is to conserve, protect and restore North America's coldwater fisheries and their watersheds.

Tomas Miller believes the work of the Driftless Chapters, including the North Bear Chapter is critical to both the northeast Iowa region and future generations.  On Saturday, he pledged his support to Brett Lorenzen the President of the North Bear Chapter.  As a first step, Tom donated 50 copies of his 2009 State of Iowa Trout Stamp to the Chapter. Tom authorized the sale of the prints at a reduced price of $30 (normally $60) - with 100% of all proceeds going directly to the Driftless Chapters of Trout Unlimited. Copies of the print are available by contacting Brett Lorenzen at 515-988-9809. The Chapters web site is located at www.tu-northbear.org.I share their vision of protecting and restoring our cold water streams.  I encourage others to join the efforts of Trout Unlimited to create streams which teem with wildlife, where water and soil are protected. We want to build a future to make it easy for everyone—children, individuals with disabilities and others—to observe wildlife, practice ecology and to hunt and fish.

Earlier in 2009, Tom also won the 2010 Iowa Trout Stamp competition.  It is my goal to collaborate with the Drifless Chapter to use the 2010 Iowa Trout Stamp to promote their work.   Both Tom and Brett Lorenzen believe that we must actively and intentionally protect this treasure and encourage the next generation to be wildlife enthusiasts, observers, protectors, sportsmen and artists.

Tom Wins Again with Painted Vision!

Tom Wins Again with Painted Vision!

In another juried competition, Tomas Miller has been selected Ducks Unlimted’s 2010 Artist of the Year.  The competition for the 2010 Print of the Year was held on Saturday, February 13th at the Annual Ducks Unlimited Conference in Des Moines, Iowa.  Tom’s painting titled “Storm Chasers” depicts a family of Canada Geese taking flight ahead of an approaching thunderstorm.  The painting features a beautiful wetland area bordered by upland grass and a deciduous forest with majestic fall colors.

I have a dream or a vision and it is captured in this painting.  I want to work with others to build a shared vision and a special place like the one in this painting.  It’s a place that teems with wildlife. Water and soil are protected. Special accommodations make it easy for everyone—children, individuals with disabilities and others—to observe wildlife, practice ecology and hunt. Here too, aspiring artists photograph, study and receive support from experienced wildlife artists.

And, ultimately, the project will house an art studio and will be donated to preservationists who will continue to inspire generations to come.

Earlier in 2009, the artist also won separate competitions for the 2010 Iowa Duck Stamp, the 2010 Iowa Habitat (Hunting) Stamp and the 2010 Iowa Trout Stamp.  In the history of the contests, no Artist has ever won all four competitions in the same year.  Miller stated that he felt blessed to have won each contest.  I’m inspired every day I wake up to see the beautiful land and wildlife of our country.  Tom believes we must actively and intentionally protect this treasure and encourage the next generation to be wildlife enthusiasts, observers, protectors, sportsmen and artists.

Tom agreed to provide Ducks Unlimited the exclusive rights to reproduce the print in 2010.  Prints will be available through the Iowa Ducks Unlimited Sponsor Print program beginning July of 2010.  Ducks Unlimited is the world’s leading organization for wetlands conservation.
